Holi – Let’s Celebrate This Festival on 10th March 2020

Holi is one of the most admired festivals that is celebrated by people of different cultures across the world. Holi, also known as the festival of love or the festival of spring unites the people of all sections by removing the negative attitude or the bad feeling towards each other. This Indian festival is celebrated on the Purnima or the Full moon day in the Falgun month of the Hindu calendar. Choti Holi or Holika Dahan is celebrated on the first evening with the next day as Holi. It is known by different names across different regions of the world.

Festival Of Colors

Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm and joy across different regions of India. The vibrant colors bring a positive attitude among the minds of the individual and the people rejoice it very much. On the first day of the celebration, the rituals begin by lighting the bonfire and thus it symbolizes good over evil. On the main day, people play with colors with their friends and families and thus exchange sweets with each other. They also convey love and respect towards each other. With water guns, singing, dancing, colors as well as the overload of indulgence, the festival is enjoyed by people across India. It is known as Doljatra in West Bengal and Lath Marr Holi in Uttar Pradesh. The feast of Holi is celebrated with various foods including sweet items. As it is said that Indian festivals are incomplete without Holi, the most popular sweets are Ladoo, Burfi, Gujiya, Imarti, and many more.

As per the scriptures of Hinduism, Holika, the aunt of Prahlad was a blind follower of Vishnu. Hiranyakashypa, the father of Prahlad regarded Vishnu as his rivalry. To kill his son, he has taken the help of his sister, Holika by giving him punishment to walk on the fire. Holika has taken Prahlad on her lap and thus set herself on fire. Prahlad was not affected this time as he kept on chanting the name of Vishnu constantly. The Holika Dahan which is celebrated on the previous day of the festival is celebrated on the memory of this particular episode. People gather in front of the bonfire that takes place in clean or sacred areas. On the next day, people get up early in the morning and thus start preparing for the festivals. They spray watercolor at each other by enjoying different varieties of snacks and thus mark the festival of spring. The thandai and the gujiya are the most important vital savories that are given more attention during this festival.

With the beginning of the spring season, the Northern region of India starts enjoying the mood of Holi with different colors. Further, the festival also highlights the time of good harvest as well as the fertility of the land. The everlasting love of Radha and Krishna is celebrated by this festival. It is celebrated with grandeur and festivity in Vrindavan as well as Mathura. As both these cities are associated with Lord Krishna, many tourists visit these cities at the time of celebration. This festival of color provides an opportunity for individuals to get reunited with their friends, family as well as near and dear ones. Moreover, the celebration also brings color to the life of the individuals by providing them to break from their monotonous life. They also share joy and love. On the day of Holi, people chase each other and throw gulal, water-filled balloons, and colors with pichkaris. To save the environment from pollution, it is necessary to make the festival eco-friendly by avoiding chemical colors, using wastewater while playing Holi, and burning woods during Holika burning.
