Happy 74th Independence Day – Let’s Salute the Nation

Importance of I-Day

As India marks its 74th Independence Day this year let’s take a moment to recollect the milestones achieved in this splendid journey. The commemoration of Independence Day marks the end of British Rule in India in 1947. Independence Day is celebrated to remember the sacrifices the leaders of the country made to achieve freedom for their fellow citizens.

It also signifies partition of the subcontinent into two countries India and Pakistan which took place at midnight of 14th-15th August 1947. It was on the 15th of August,1947 our first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hoist the National Flag over the Lahori Gate at Red Fort, New Delhi. To date, a similar ceremony is performed on the same platform by the contemporary Prime Ministers of our country.

It is not only India that celebrates15th August as its Independence Day but countries such as North Korea, South Korea, Bahrain, Liechtenstein, and the Republic of Congo.

To Know the Unknown

Lord Mountbatten was the first Governor-General of India and he was the one to choose 15thAugust as India’s Independence Day. The name India has been derived from the River Indus. Another noteworthy aspect is the time when India got its Independence it had no National Anthem. In the year 1911, Jana Gana Mana was written which was eventually adopted as the National Anthem on 24th January 1950.

The Indian National Flag is based on the Swaraj Flag which was the flag of the Indian National Congress. This flag was designed by a freedom fighter named Pingali Venkayya.

This day indeed inculcates a sense of pride among all the Indians across the globe. Independence is celebrated with infinite amounts of fervor and enthusiasm across the nation. This day is celebrated by the people belonging to different castes, ethnicities, religions, and gender. All of them come together and unite to celebrate this day.

It is observed in schools and colleges usually by flag hoisting followed by patriotic performances and sweets distribution. The event of Kite Flying is associated with Independence Day. The day symbolizes freedom and people express their patriotism for their country by using national flags of different sizes.

15th August 2020

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak this year things might not be the same, but the event will take place with the required precautionary measures. This year on the I-Day i.e.15th August 2020 (Saturday) program will comprise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech, a 21-gun salute, and unfurling of the Indian Flag. Unlike the previous years, there will be a lesser number of invitees who would get to hear the PM’s speech live.

As recommended by the Ministry of Home Affairs the COVID frontline warriors such as the doctors, health warriors, sanitization workers might be invited to recognize their noble service during the pandemic.

Well, as an Indian this day indeed instills a feeling of freedom, pride, and remembering all those who sacrificed their lives for our country.

Here’s wishing each one of you a very Happy Independence Day!
